The previous 2-3 times this was fixed by tapping on the starter/solenoid and/or checking fuses were pushed in and battery cables tight. Over the last few months the starter will sound a little sluggish one start, and then the next time I go to start the starter doesn't even turn over, no click at all. If it starts better than it is most likely th oring issue.I picked up a 2002 4.7 WJ about a year ago and have had an intermittent not starting problem that currently has my Jeep stranded in the university parking lot. You should hear the fuel pump humming for a second or 2 while the ignition is in the On position. Try "cycling" the ignition On/Off a few times WITHOUT starting the Jeep. Probably why the dealer can not replicate the problem. The rig needs to sit over night for the problenm to occur. The pain in the rear with this problem is you have to wait an entire day for the problem to re occur! If it starts better than it is most likely th oring issue. I did however create an access panel in the spare tire cave in case it happens again. I figure If I was going to take to the time to get to the fuel pump, I was going to replace the entire unit and not waste time with o rings. To resolve the problem I put in a new fuel pump. This allows the fuel line to emty / de pressurize over night. The problem is the o ring has a slow leak. The problem is that there is a o ring in the fuel pump that is supposed to maintain pressure. I have a 2002 WJ that had the fuel pump / o ring issue. Perhaps this truck has a cold start solinoid that opening when it shouldn't? I have no idea yet. I know the spark plugs were just changed. I mean, it runs richer at startup than my 1974 International. As in it's getting way too much at startup. So it's either going to be fuel or spark, but right now I'm leaning toward fuel. That 4.7HO isn't hurting for power, that's for sure. Problem is occurring without tripping the CEL and the truck runs great after startup. Once warmed up, the gasoline smell disappears and no smoke is present in the exhaust. The exhaust smells strongly of gasoline, putting out black smoke intially (about 3 seconds) then blue for 15 seconds or so more. However, they all come on within five seconds. I can hear that intially not all cylinders are firing. It would be best described as "putting into life slowly". The symptoms I have observed thus far is that the engine is reluctant to catch and run under it's own power, nessesitating long crank times. The dealer has replaced the starter, but that I think was rather stupid of them, because the engine turns over with gusto and my parents have indicated to me that the symptoms are unchanged. The problem is as follows: The engine has a difficult time starting cold (they call this cold?!). They have replaced the starter (stupid) and then claimed they were unable to duplicate the problem. It's under warranty currently, but the dealer has thus far been unable to fix her problem (big surprise!) in the two visits the truck has had with them. My mother for some inexplicable reason drives a 2002 Grand Cherokee with the HO 4.7 v8. I'm down in Sarasota, Florida for some fun in the sun visiting my parents.
